Oklahoma Representative John Sullivan Cosponsors Forced-dues Repeal Bill

Right to Work Bill Would Bar Firing Workers for Refusal to Pay Union Dues; Congressional Leaders Urged to Join Campaign for ‘Much Needed Reform’

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Mark Mix, President of the National Right to Work Committee (NRTWC), speaking on behalf over 28,000 Oklahoma supporters of Right to Work, praised Oklahoma Rep. John Sullivan (R-Dist. 1), for his decision to sign on as a cosponsor of H.R. 697, the National Right to Work Act.

H.R. 697, introduced on January 24, 2007, with 52 original cosponsors, would not add a single word to federal labor law. It would simply repeal the coercive federal labor-law provisions that authorize the firing of employees for refusal to pay dues or fees to a labor union.

Under current federal labor law, over 7.3 million American employees can be fired unless they pay dues or fees to union officials. H.R. 697 would bar such firings.

“In a world where political spin seems to rule the day, Right to Work is a straightforward, common-sense issue. A worker’s right to subject himself to union control over his working environment is only a right if that same worker has the right to opt out, or never join at all,” pointed out the NRTWC president.

“Paying heed to the overwhelming majority of Right to Work supporters among their constituents, a total of 83 congressmen, to date, have joined lead sponsor South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson (R-Dist. 2) as cosponsors in support of H.R. 697,” said Mix. “A companion Senate version of the bill (S. 1301) was introduced on May 3, 2007.”

“Polls show that roughly 80% of Americans support an employee’s right to choose whether or not they affiliate with a union,” the Right to Work leader continued. “Compulsory unionism robs American workers of their freedom, corrupts our political system, and saps our economy of productivity and jobs.

U.S. Labor Department statistics show that between 1995 and 2005, non-farm private sector employment in the 21 states that had Right to Work laws during that whole period grew by 20.2% compared to just 11.3% in the states that don’t protect employees from federally-imposed forced-union dues. And during that same period, real personal income grew by 37.1% in Right to Work states, compared to 26.7% in forced-dues states. That’s 38.9% more real personal income growth in Right to Work states than in forced-dues states when inflation is taken into account.

While it’s predictable that neither House Speaker Nancy Pelosi nor Senate President Harry Reid will move in support of Right to Work in this Congress, it is important that every member of Congress who opposes forced unionism sign on as a cosponsor of this Act as soon as possible in hopes of forcing a roll-call vote on this issue so that all Americans will know which members of Congress favor coercion in the workplace or freedom for American workers.
