Virginia House Candidate Surrenders to Big Labor Bosses over Worker Freedom

Right to Work group criticizes "Clinton-esque campaign double-talk"; urges Reese to stop currying favor from Big Labor

FOR RELEASE: August 20, 2001

SPRINGFIELD, Va. – John Tate, vice president of the 2.2 million-member National Right to Work Committee®, criticized Virginia House of Delegates candidate Gary Reese (R-67th) for engaging in "Clinton-esque campaign double-talk" by endorsing Big Labor's attempt to corral public employees into forced union representation.

Responding to an overwhelming outcry of Virginia voters, Mr. Reese answered his 2001 Right to Work Candidate Survey pledging to support the commonwealth's Right to Work Law and to oppose Virginia union bosses' biannual attempt to be granted monopoly bargaining privileges for public employees.

However, Right to Work officers have discovered Mr. Reese has pledged fealty to Virginia Education Association union barons, obliging support of "binding, written agreements with elected representatives of a majority of school employees."

Mr. Tate said Mr. Reese's change of heart raised serious concerns about who Virginia voters can trust.

"A candidate cannot support Right to Work for Virginia's public employees on one hand, then support Organized Labor's attempt to forcibly unionize thousands of Virginia teachers and other public school workers."

The other two candidates for delegate in the 67th District, John Clerici and David Warrington, have both pledged 100% support for Virginia's Right to Work Law and to oppose any attempt in the legislature to grant union officials monopoly bargaining power over public employees.

"Union bosses have long-viewed monopoly bargaining as the 'camel's nose' under the tent of Virginia's Right to Work Law. Any attempt to destroy workers' ability to bargain for themselves free of union-boss coercion, can only be seen as a serious threat the commonwealth's Right to Work Law.

"I urge Mr. Reese to immediately renounce his anti-Right to Work stance and publicly pledge his unequivocal support for Virginia's Right to Work Law and the individual bargaining rights for public employees," Mr. Tate said in conclusion.
