Davenport Advisory

FOR RELEASE: October 4, 2002

Dear Editor:

On Tuesday, October 8, Kirsten Andersen, Director of Communications for the 2.2 million-member National Right to Work Committee®, will hold a press conference in Davenport to announce a TV ad campaign highlighting the issue of compulsory unionism in Iowa’s U.S. Senate race.

The 2:30 PM press conference will take place at the Holiday Inn Davenport, 5202 Brady Street, Davenport, Iowa.

TV advertisements that will run statewide as the Senatorial election is heating up are part of a $3 million nationwide issue discussion program initiated by the National Right to Work Committee®.

The Iowa ad will be previewed at the October 8 Davenport news conference. For directions, see the following page.

The National Right to Work Committee®’s aim is to boost ongoing efforts in Congress to repeal federal labor-law provisions under which eight million private employees, including thousands of Iowans, are forced to pay union dues or “fees” as a condition of employment.

Over the past few months, the nearly 65,000 Right to Work members in Iowa have flooded their Senate candidates’ offices with phone calls, letters and postcards asking them to support forced-dues repeal.

At the news conference, Ms. Andersen will announce how the two leading candidates, Incumbent Senator Tom Harkin and his challenger, Congressman Greg Ganske have responded, and discuss the Right to Work group’s next move.

The National Right to Work Act (S. 873/H.R. 1109) would remove the federal authorization for forced union dues which, because of the supremacy of federal law, restricts the freedom of many employees even in Right to Work states such as Iowa.

The position of Iowa’s next U.S. Senator may prove critical to efforts to abolish the congressionally-imposed loopholes in Iowa’s Right to Work law.

State officials have no power to close loopholes that authorize the firing of Iowa airline employees, railroad employees, etc., for refusal to bankroll a union.

It’s an issue that this fall’s U.S Senate candidates must address.

My staff and I hope you will cover this press conference. We will be in touch with you soon to follow up.

Sincerely,

John F. Tate

Vice President
