Right To Work Officer: Tv Ad Will Urge John Cooksey To Follow Through On Campaign Promises

FOR RELEASE: August 1, 2002

Alexandria, LA -- National Right to Work Committee® Vice President John Tate paid a visit to Louisiana today to unveil a new television ad produced by the 2.2 million-member national grassroots organization that will begin airing in media markets throughout Louisiana this week.

Mr. Tate spoke at the Louisiana Convention Center Hampton Inn this morning.

The National Right to Work Committee® is running the ad as part of a nationwide media campaign to persuade 5th District Congressman John Cooksey and other key Congressmen to follow through on their public promises to cosponsor the National Right to Work Act (H.R. 1109).

The National Right to Work Act would end forced-unionism nationwide by removing the provision in federal law that authorizes union officials to confiscate union dues from workers as a condition of employment.

Congressman Cooksey, who is running for U.S. Senate, pledged during his 1996 campaign to “cosponsor and seek roll-call votes on” the National Right to Work Act. But since that time, despite strong support for the bill from nearly 80% of his constituents, Mr. Cooksey has repeatedly refused to cosponsor.

“There is no reason why Congressman Cooksey shouldn’t have kept the promise he made to his constituents,” Mr. Tate said.

“Nearly 8 of 10 Americans support this legislation,” Mr. Tate continued. “Why would Congressman Cooksey choose to ignore the will of the people who sent him to Washington? It is clearly time for Mr. Cooksey to honor his pledge.”

“I believe that before John Cooksey asks the people of Louisiana to choose him as their next Senator, he ought to honor the promises he made as a Congressman.

Nationwide polls show Americans oppose forced union affiliation by a nearly four-to-one margin.

Because of the supremacy of federal law, even in Louisiana and other states that have enacted Right to Work laws, hundreds of thousands of employees are forced to support unions financially in order to secure and maintain employment.

(A fact sheet follows providing additional information on how federal labor law forces many employees in Louisiana and other Right to Work states to bankroll a union to keep their jobs.)
