Michelle Malkin’s most recent syndicated column points out how nearly one-fourth of the Administration’s waivers on ObamaCare have been granted to big labor unions including the Teamster who hailed Obama for “enacting historic health care reform, providing health insurance to millions of Americans who don’t have it and controlling costs for millions more who do.” The Teamsters have obtained waivers for 17 different locals.
The House GOP is getting to the bottom of the “waivers” the Obama Administration has given to hundreds of labor unions and political supporters seeking to be exempted from ObamaCare.
“If there are exemptions,” Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) said, “what was the process by which those exemptions were sought and given?”
Among those exempted: three SEIU locals from Chicago. Just to remind readers, the SEIU gave $27 million to support Obama’s election and lobbied hard for the enactment of the bill.
More and more unions are being exempted from the onerous provisions of ObamaCare while we get ready to bear the burden. The latest batch of waivers include: the Bricklayers Local 1 of MD, VA and DC, the United Food and Commercial Workers Union in Mount Laurel, New Jersey, the Indiana Teamsters Health Benefits Fund, Service Employees International Union Local 1 Cleveland Welfare Fund, and more.
From the National Right To Work Legal Defense Foundation/ Frank Luntz & The Word Doctors 2010 Union Member Attitude Survey (October 26 to October 28, 2010):
Question 21. In 2010, President Obama and Democrats in Congress passed a nearly $1 trillion healthcare reform bill. Supporters of the bill said it would lower healthcare costs and expand access, while opponents said it would increases costs and reduce quality of care. In your opinion, was that bill very much a success, somewhat a success, somewhat a failure, or very much a failure?
During the health care debate, the union bosses of the AFl-CIO made bold threats to House Democrats — vote against ObamaCare and we will sit on our hands during your re-election battle. As Miss Emily Letella on Saturday Night Live used to say, “Nevermind.”
With many of their congressional water carriers struggling for their political lives, the AFL-CIO backed of their threat putting power before principle. The Hill reports:
The AFL-CIO released its first round of mailers in support of endangered Democrats this week. In it, the union sought to bolster Rep. Zack Space’s (D-Ohio) campaign with literature attacking his Republican opponent.
Space was the lone Democrat from Ohio’s congressional delegation to vote against the healthcare bill, and his position enraged labor groups.
But he’s not the only lawmaker who voted against the legislation to see union support trickle back his way. (more…)

In Huntington, West Virginia blood collections were suspended Wednesday as 60 union workers joined a broader coalition of SEIU activists to initiate a strike against the American Red Cross.
